Hi, I’m Kate.
For years I tried answering a question:
What’s the right kind of person to be?
In trying to answer, I’ve found I’m more interested in another one:
What is it to be a person?
I write from ordinary life.
A conversation.
A walk.
A memory.
Something that catches my attention and asks me to keep looking.
For me, writing is where noticing becomes a literary act.
I’m learning to trust careful perception as a way of navigating my own life, and to write in ways that encourage others to trust theirs.
My essays stay close to experience, following scenes instead of arguments.
I’m interested in moments of co-recognition—
when something ordinary is written clearly enough that another person quietly feels,
I know that too.
If that kind of attention interests you, welcome.
Kate
